The Universal Binary Sensor is a wireless module that makes it possible to improve the functionality of any sensor with a binary output by allowing it to communicate with a Z-Wave wireless network and the FIBARO building intelligence system. Moreover, the module allows for wireless communication between the system and the DS18B20 temperature sensors. The device can service up to two binary sensors and up to four DS18B20 temperature sensors. The Sensor was designed for installation in the housing of a sensor or another device, the functionality of which you wish to improve.
The Universal Binary Sensor may be used whenever wireless collection of data from sensors is required. Once additional safety housing have been installed, the Sensor can also be used in areas with high humidity and high temperature. The Sensor’s main function is the integration of the wireless FIBARO system with the existing wire-based and wireless alarm and measurement systems. As an element of the safety system the device is transparent for parametric alarm lines.

I fitted this unit to the rear of a standard domestic PIR of an existing intruder alarm. It obtains its power from the PIR and wired in series with the Tamper and alarm pairs. I also fitted a DS18B20 temperature sensor giving me room temperature. This sensor connects to homeseer to trigger lights via the PIR and also temperature but at the same time not interfering with the conventional alarm fitted to the premises.

I built this device into a complete Z-Wave sensor device and it integrated nicely with my HomeSeer software. I added a 9v power supply, LED termination strips to a small pcb and mounting box. All parts from Maplin. DS18B20's from UK Automation, connected using standard telephone cable. HomeSeer recognised 2 digital inputs and 3 of the 4 temperature devices. The Fibaro device does not appear to sleep, so it flattened a 9V battery in 2 days, hence the power supply! I am building more of these for central heating monitoring.
